The value of Schalke’s free transfers to the Premier League appears to be going up every season.

Summer 2016 saw Joel Matip move to Liverpool, Sead Kolasinac has rocked up at Arsenal for nothing this year, and next could be Max Meyer.

Schalke’s failure at securing players to good contracts, and keeping players happy has led them to a difficult situation with Meyer. The 21 year old currently has no interest in signing an extension, and with his contract running out in June 2018, Tottenham and Liverpool are ‘considered favourites’ to sign the player say Bild.

Tottenham have been repeatedly linked with Meyer over the past year after a failed attempt to sign him during the summer 2017 transfer window. Meyer himself has spoken of that transfer approach, and that encouraged rumours to continue through this summer window.

An approach from Spurs doesn’t seem likely before the window closes, but Tottenham and Liverpool can start talks with Meyer in January and try to sign him on a pre-contract, like the Reds did with Matip. The two clubs are already in a tussle for the impressive free signing.

Scahlke’s yearly freebie has a good chance of continuing.

Surely it’s worth a small bid now? Just to edge ahead of the competition…
