Do Tottenham really need a new defensive midfielder? With Victor Wanyama, Moussa Dembélé and Eric Dier all capable of playing there, recruitment in that role probably isn’t a priority.

However, Gazzetta dello Sport on Monday believe it is, with a move for Sevilla’s Steven N’Zonzi apparently on the cards for Mauricio Pochettino.

The French defensive midfielder is one of the main targets for Juventus this summer, who have highlighted Paris Saint-Germain’s Blaise Matuidi as a potential alternative, but the Italian newspaper believe they have competition.

Alongside Tottenham, the aforementioned French side are also keen, mostly because Unai Emery, their current manager, used to have him under his command during his time in charge of the La Liga side.

Frankly, this seems like a bit of a gamble from Gazzetta, whose basis for the article is that negotiations with Juventus have ‘stalled’, and our bet would be Spurs’ name being chucked in there to get everything up and running again, using the Premier League side’s spending power as a fear tactic, knowing full well the €40m release clause wouldn’t be ‘an obstacle’ for both Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain.

We’ll see where this goes, but the Sport Witness gut feeling is that it’s just a passing comment.
