Wolves welcome Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday evening, and one man will be paying close attention to both clubs. Jorge Mendes has helped take Wolves to England’s top division and keep them there, with his relationship with the club well known.

Nuno Espirito Santo was the agent’s first client and it’s natural that the pair have kept a close relationship. Indeed, so close has Mendes seemed to Wolves and their owners, that complaints from elsewhere in the Championship saw an investigation into what was happening… one which absolved either party of breaking the rules.

Over at Tottenham, Mendes has a connection through Jose Mourinho, although L’Equipe report today it was another top agent, Pini Zahavi, who arranged the manager’s arrival at Spurs, due to his close relationship with Daniel Levy.

Tottenham aren’t quite as close to Mendes as Wolves, being ‘just a friendly club’ to the agent, although there’s still links building.

L’Equipe show how the agent connections impacted both clubs in recent markets: ‘He placed a right-back, Nelson Semedo (€30m), to Wolves, and at the same time sold the incumbent, the Irishman Matt Doherty (€ 6.8m), to Tottenham, on the insistence of his client, Jose Mourinho, who had already brought in another player from Mendes, Gedson Fernandes (on loan with option to buy), last winter.’

There’s more business on the way, with it being expected that Gedson Fernandes will return to Benfica in the winter market, having failed to have an impact at Spurs.

Should that then see another Mendes connection used to bring in a squad replacement remains to be seen… but would surprise nobody.
