If things continue the way they are going in the transfer rumour mill, every single Premier League (and even one Championship) club could be linked with Dries Mertens come the summer.

While the Belgian media believed a ‘smaller’ club would make more sense for the 29-year-old forward, their Italian counterparts preferred to go big with Manchester United and Chelsea among the names suggested.

However, DH on Tuesday go against the Belgian trend and throw another name into the mix: Tottenham.

Tottenham’s Belgian contingent are a source of pride for the country’s media, so it would be no surprise if DH would like see to Mertens join Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Mousa Dembele.

The daily newspaper explain that talks between the Napoli forward and his club regarding a contract renewal are going well, yet nothing has ben signed due to one hiccup: the release clause.

The Serie A club, understandably, want to insert a rather large clause in the deal to prevent him from being taken away for cheap, but the player, while keen to stay in Naples, isn’t discarding a somewhere else, and would therefore like the clause to be affordable.

With this still being debated, DH explain that Tottenham and Manchester United are the two sides who are ‘very interested’ by Mertens’ services.

The prospect of playing someone like Mertens behind a prolific goalscorer like Harry Kane certainly looks good on paper, with the Belgian forward demonstrating this season a knack for finding the back of the net.

Scoring his 27th goal of the season at the weekend in a 3-0 over Udinese, DH seem to think the Belgian has impressed Mauricio Pochettino enough to add him to his list of summer transfer targets.

Until the deal is signed, this is bound to continue endlessly, so brace yourselves for more.
