For a while since Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in Barcelona’s André Gomes keeps popping up here and there, and now, Catalan outlet Sport takes the rumour quite seriously.
They report Mauricio Pochettino’s side is indeed interested in the midfielder, and a bid is expected to sign him in the summer window.
Tottenham’s input in the race is taken by Sport as a competition to West Ham, who they believe already tried to sign the player last year, as an alternative to Sporting’s Willian Carvalho.
Despite reporting the interest from Tottenham, the outlet doesn’t seem to have any info on how much or when will the club bid for Gomes.
Sport recalls the 24-year-old has a €100m release clause at Barcelona, and even though it’s clear the Catalan side wouldn’t demand that much, the player’s real price isn’t reported.
It even sounds sarcastic when they recall there’s a clause in Gomes’ contract which says Barça would pay him €15m in case he wins the Ballon d’Or.
Tottenham’s interest has always felt doubtful, and that hasn’t changed, it just seemed like one wheeled out through habit. Gomes has struggled at Barcelona and recently spoke openly about his mental barriers to performing.
Whilst Gomes’ words were brave and welcome, combined with his poor performances it’s not an attraction tool for interested clubs. The Portuguese international would be fortunate with Tottenham interest.
