Thursday morning saw France’s Foot Mercato link Tottenham with a move for Thomas Lemar.
At the same time, the Spanish sport newspapers were explaining how Atletico Madrid need the Frenchman off their wage bill in order to sign a striker this month, potentially Edinson Cavani.
They couldn’t really muster together a list of interested clubs, with one newspaper having a stab at Arsenal on the basis that the Gunners have been linked previously.
The French claims have since been grasped, mainly by AS who are pretty close to Atletico. In a full page article it’s stated Tottenham’s reported interest in Lemar ‘brings Cavani closer’ to the Rojiblancos.
Cavani is Diego Simeone’s ‘obsession’, and the manager often gets what he wants out of Atletico. PSG are said to be looking to get €10m for the Uruguayan, a low fee because his contract expires in June.
Wages are the real problem.
Whilst AS can’t add anything about Tottenham, it’s clear a Spurs approach would be welcomed. Atletico would prefer a permanent sale, yet given their need and how much Lemar has flopped and subsequently devalued, they may have to take a loan deal with a buying option.
That potentially presents a low risk transfer for Daniel Levy and one with the potential to be a bargain.
Mundo Deportivo also grasp the French reports of Tottenham interest, and if Spurs are genuine there’s a reasonable chance of getting this one done.
