Last week Catalan newspaper Sport claimed Tottenham were moving in on Andre Gomes and set to snatch the midfielder away from Everton.
Owned by Barcelona, Gomes spent last season at Goodison Park and it’s been widely expected he’ll move there on a permanent basis. Marco Silva has made it clear he expects his club to do everything possible to keep the player at Everton, so serious interest from elsewhere would be a worry.
Sport’s claims weren’t really picked up elsewhere in the Spanish media, which could suggest it was an effort from Barcelona to hurry Everton into making a good offer and getting the deal done quickly… using Tottenham to encourage them to do so.
Thursday’s edition of Marca has an article on Barcelona exits, and they state Tottenham are interested.
An estimated price is put at just €20-25m which would surely be a good deal for either Everton or Spurs. Barcelona need the money to help fund their own summer spending.
Even if the Tottenham claims are still false, it’s probably better the Toffees don’t wait too long.
