Tottenham have not made contact with Wolfsburg about a move for striker Wout Weghorst, and don’t need him anyway according to the club’s sports director Marcel Schäfer.

Spurs are on the hunt for a striker before the end of the transfer window, with Jose Mourinho keen to find the alternative to Harry Kane that has long been needed.

Several strikers across Europe have thus been linked with a move, with several reports over the last week stating Weghorst is a target.

His club, Wolfsburg, were said to be ‘very relaxed’ about the situation believing that the closer to the October 5th deadline we get, the more they think their striker will be staying.

Now their sports director Marcel Schäfer has reiterated their stance, even going as far as to say that Tottenham don’t even need the player.

“Wout Weghorst has been speculating in the media for weeks, months. Nobody has contacted us yet,” he told Sport 1.

“If you look at the last Tottenham game in the Premier League you can see that they have fewer problems on the attack.

“Now they also signed Gareth Bale. There is more of a problem over who is allowed to play. They don’t need Wout.”

The website also pours a little cold water on the situation, explaining that the Dutch striker may not even want the move to Tottenham.

He had been keen to move to promote himself and force his way into Ronald Koeman’s plans with the Netherlands, with the manager having made it clear he wasn’t a fan.

With Koeman having gone to Barcelona, though, his chances of an international call-up have increased exponentially.

For him to be in contention, he’ll have to star at club level, and that is more likely to happen playing week in week out for Wolfsburg than sitting on Tottenham’s bench.

Thus, a move wouldn’t make sense for him, although as is always the case, money is likely to play its part.
