The Turkish media haven’t known what to make of Vincent Janssen since the Dutchman arrived from Tottenham.
For much of the summer Fenerbahce had been linked with signing a big name striker, with Diego Costa strongly linked towards the end of the window. When Janssen arrived from Spurs he was given the full airport treatment and fanfare, and then the press tried to talk the move up.
It was claimed, almost certainly incorrectly, that Mauricio Pochettino had been against the player leaving Tottenham, but Janssen prioritised Fenerbahce above others and pushed for the deal.
Then, after that hype building and PR, the doubt came.
Fans were told Janssen had a pretty poor scoring record with Tottenham, and perhaps they shouldn’t expect too much too soon.
Any doubt has been thrown out of the window after Janssen scored for Fenerbahce against Alanyaspor at the weekend, as part of a 4-1 victory.
Almost as importantly, the Tottenham loan star was widely reported to be Fener’s best performer.
The Turkish media have subsequently gone crazy for the Dutchman, and some outlets have even searched social media and found messages to back up a claim Spurs fans want the player transferred back.
Sure, it’s going over the top, but that’s all part of the passion in Turkish football.
Various newspaper including Sabah, Milliyet, Vatan and HaberTurk have colourful splashes celebrating Janssen’s great match.
A genuine good news story around a likeable footballer, and Tottenham fans will be pleased to see it.
