Eintracht Frankfurt were knocked out of the UEFA Europa League on Thursday night, with Tottenham Hotspur managing to come away with a 2-1 aggregate win over the German side.

Head coach Dino Toppmöller was dealt with significant blows early on: firstly, Mario Götze was forced off injured, then Frankfurt goalkeeper Kauã Santos followed, after he charged off his line and clattered into James Maddison in the box. He was taken off, and reports this weekend suggest that he’s torn an ACL.

The club have already seen Omar Marmoush leave for Manchester City. Now speculation surrounds another striker, Hugo Ekitike, whose name has been linked with a summer move to the Premier League.

The future isn’t looking good if he does leave, though. German outlet SGE4Ever writes that the team looked lost without him on Thursday night (he played, just not particularly well.)

But all is not lost – they state that the defeat to Spurs, as bad as they have been this season, should be nothing more than a ‘priceless’ learning curve.

it’s thought that there was no anger among fans after the loss to the Premier League club, “just applause for the team’s passion.” And that “in Frankfurt, it’s never just about results. It’s about being part of something bigger – a shared journey in which setbacks are part of the story.”
