Edson Alvarez joined Ajax in the 2019 summer window, after claims of transfer interest from England.
The Mexican, who can play in defensive midfield and central defence, hasn’t had the impact he will have hoped for. With just 549 minutes of Eredivisie football so far this season, the 22 year old is getting frustrated, and that was the case during January as well.
Monday’s edition of De Telegraaf reports Tottenham Hotspur were ‘concrete’ for a transfer during the winter market, but the player was told he wouldn’t be going anywhere by Marc Overmars and Ajax manager Erik ten Hag.
The Dutch newspaper explains that led Alvarez to believe he’d be used more in the second half of the season, however, things haven’t gone that way.
Alvarez ‘wants to leave’ Ajax in the summer if the situation doesn’t change, and it’s stated he doesn’t feel Ten Haag has confidence in him.
Ajax paid Club America €15m, and De Telegraaf feel there’s not much chance of them getting that much back.
Tottenham, therefore, would almost certainly receive a different answer should they return in the next market. As well as Jose Mourinho’s side, it’s worth keeping an eye on Wolves, who were strongly and repeatedly linked with the player prior to him choosing Ajax.
