Tottenham could be handed their chance to sign Goncalo Guedes from Valencia this summer after making an ‘enquiry’ in the January transfer window.
That’s according to Super Deporte, who say the Spanish side are now willing to sell the Portuguese star after keeping him last year.
Guedes was one of the names heavily linked with a move away from the Mestalla as Valencia looked to raise cash, but those in charge at the club elected to keep hold of him and hope he would be revalued.
That has happened, with Guedes starring under Jose Bordalas this season, racking up 13 goals and five assists to date.
That’s earned him a return to the Portugal national team, and while he hasn’t been able to shine as much with Fernando Santos’ side, this is definitely his year of ‘definitive emergence’.
Valencia are now happy to sell and belief the timing would be ‘favourable’ for a sale as he has ‘rehabilitated’ his market value and the club have ‘financial needs’ that a sale would satisfy.
They, then, could be given a second shot at the player, but they will have to fight former manager Jose Mourinho for his signature.
Super Deporte say Roma are ‘preparing a bid’ to sign Guedes, and Valencia are ‘expecting a call’ from the Italian clubs in the coming weeks to negotiate a deal.
Guedes is reportedly Mourinho’s first target, and he believes he would be the perfect complement to Tammy Abraham.
A negotiation would not be simple, but the channels between the two clubs are fluid because of Guedes’ agent Jorge Mendes, who has ties with both clubs and Mourinho himself.
The basis for the start of negotiations would be €40m, but Roma can bring that down by including players in the deal, specifically the defensive midfielder Jose Bordalas is desperate to add to their squad.
That’s something Tottenham could get involved in, having shown an interest in the player when they wanted reinforcements in January.
Indeed, perhaps Guedes would be the ideal replacement for Steven Bergwijn, who is expected to leave the club and return to the Netherlands this summer.
