In the middle of August claims emerged in France that Tottenham had made an attempt to sign Anthony Martial from Manchester United. The Frenchman had just gone through a difficult season under Jose Mourinho, and Spurs were looking to take advantage of the situation.
It was the second time Tottenham had strongly been linked with Martial by the French media, with claims of an agreed fee the summer he went to Manchester United. Spurs were said to have come to an agreement with Monaco earlier in the window, for less than United eventually paid, but the deal collapsed.
Sunday’s edition of L’Equipe backs up those claims, originally from RMC, of a summer Tottenham attempt. It’s stated Mauricio Pochettino’s side saw Martial as a Harry Kane alternative, and L’Equipe point out Spurs could have done with the 21 year old on their side yesterday.
Ultimately Jose Mourinho decided to keep Martial at Old Trafford for at least a further season, but the French newspaper say his status hasn’t really changed too much, suggesting there’s still a little doubt around the situation.
Perhaps Tottenham can try once again next summer.
