Despite a lot of positive news on Monday, Birmingham City’s chase of Torino’s Afriyie Acquah appears to have taken a wrong turn through no fault of their own.
The Serie A midfielder was said on Monday to be ‘bent on’ playing football in England, with a move to St Andrew’s potentially on its way, yet the entire deal was resting on his club finding an adequate replacement.
The man to do that job was supposed to be Bologna’s Godfred Donsah, and things were looking good, but Gazzetta dello Sport report on Tuesday morning that deal isn’t happening anymore.
According to the Italian newspaper, Bologna have put a halt to negotiations for the Ghanaian midfielder, despite the agent’s work, after a one year €1m loan with a view to buy at €5m didn’t make the cut.
In turn, with no like for like replacement on its way, Gazzetta explain Torino could very well block Acquah’s potential €8m transfer to Birmingham City, causing even more headaches for Harry Redknapp.
The former Spurs manager has already seen a move for Ogenyi Onazi fall through due to work permit issues, and waving goodbye to the possibility of signing the Torino midfielder wasn’t part of the plan.
Gazzetta state that instead of selling Acquah, Torino could focus on trying to get rid of Swedish midfielder Samuel Gustafson, who arrived just last year from Häcken.
