Watford allowed Dimitri Foulquier to go out on loan to French club RC Strasbourg for the 2017/18 season, immediately after signing the right-back from Granada.

The 26-year-old struggled with a hamstring injury in the first half of the season and after recovering, went on to make 16 appearances in Ligue 1.

Last summer, the Hornets signed Marc Navarro from Espanyol and with his arrival, Javi Gracia had Daryl Janmaat and Kiko Femenia as the three recognised right-backs in the squad.

For this reason, the Premier League club asked Foulquier if he could go out on another loan spell, which is why the Frenchman joined Getafe on a temporary deal last summer, after completing pre-season with Watford.

“Last year in Strasbourg I was injured the first half of the season, the second half I played almost every game. I went back to Watford, I did the pre-season, and they told me it would be nice if I left on loan,” Foulquier told Foot Mercato.

Several clubs in France were keen on acquiring Foulquier’s services on a loan deal for this season, but the fullback decided to join Getafe. He has explained the reason for his choice.

“I had opportunities in France especially, and in other championships, but it’s true that after playing four years in Granada I wanted to go back to Spain,” Foulquier said.

“It’s a league I love, a culture I already know, a language I already know. I waited, there was some information, but I waited for a good opportunity.

“Then Getafe called me because I matched the profile the coach was looking for. It made me happy, it is in Spain, a good club, so I accepted the challenge.”

Foulquier is yet to make an appearance for Watford and whether or not if he will be included Gracia’s plans for next season is to be seen in the summer.
