Following reports from the English media this week claiming Chelsea owner Todd Boehly wants to buy Portimonense, we now get to see a better explanation coming from Portugal.
Newspaper O Jogo today features a big piece about it, as they managed to have a conversation with club president Rodiney Sampaio.
In the story’s first paragraph, it’s claimed the club’s boss ‘confirmed’ the news that Boehly wants to make the purchase. That information, however, isn’t included in the interview, as the quotes only have him praising the job they’ve been doing at the Portuguese side.
Regarding the takeover, Rodiney Sampaio pointed out that the one responsible for a potential sale would be Theodoro Fonseca, who’s the major shareholder at the club.
“It is always the major shareholder that deals with the issue, and I can assure you that there is no desire to sell to any group that is not interested in continuing this unique project,” Sampaio told O Jogo.
“It’s nine years of investment and hard work for the future. Today, we have top structures, a large and valuable squad with many young people, and a debt-free club.”
It’s also reported that Boehly isn’t the only one involved in this deal. It’s said there are actually four North American groups involved in the operation, with the Chelsea owner ‘heading’ all this.
Speaking of how much Portimonense are worth, Sampaoio claimed they had “two proposals, one for €50m, which was rejected, made by a Chinese group four years ago, and also by a consortium from the Emirates, of €30m, which was also rejected at the same time.”
For now, it’s still unclear what the plans Boehly has for Portimonense. However, in case Chelsea do get them as a partner club, that could mean a lot for the Blues, as the Portuguese market continues to reveal many talents year after year.
