Barcelona’s interest in Georginio Wijnaldum has been widely reported in the Spanish media over the past few months.
On December 11th, we carried a report from Mundo Deportivo, who explained the Liverpool midfielder is the ‘favourite’ target for Ronald Koeman and his profile fits the needs of the Catalan club for January.
Koeman, however, is aware the 30-year-old’s arrival at the Camp Nou in the winter market is almost impossible, due to the Blaugrana’s financial situation.
Today’s edition of Mundo Deportivo once again explains the player is still on Koeman’s transfer list and he could be available on a free transfer next summer.
Lyon’s Memphis Depay and Manchester City’s Eric García, who are also in the final year of contract, are other main targets for Barcelona.
Journalist Miguel Rico, writing in the last page of the same newspaper, takes a look at the situation involving Depay, García and Wijnaldum.
Last month, Barcelona reached an agreement with their players to adjust their salaries. Rico explains the club must ‘continue to be very careful’ when offering salaries to the Camp Nou side’s new additions.
The journalist states there wouldn’t be any problem for Barca to find a salary agreement with Depay and García.
As for Wijnaldum, the Dutchman earns £70,000 per week or £3.9m annually. ‘Today, a fortune’, says Rico about the Liverpool player’s salary. This would suggest it will be difficult for Barcelona to sign their manager’s favourite target, unless he agrees to take a pay cut.
