Toby Alderweireld has started three matches for Tottenham so far this season and is very much back in the fold for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Leading up to the summer transfer window, it was felt as almost certain that the Belgian defender would be securing a move away from the London club.

Disagreements over negotiations for a contract renewal led to a stand-off, and Alderweireld found himself out of the team… whether that be due to fitness, form or decisions taken away from the football pitch.

As next summer approaches, and also the winter transfer window, there will again be questions about the players future if there’s no renewal.

Recently the Belgian media suggested that talks on a new contract could start again, and Alderweireld is holding his hand out.

Quoted by Belgian newspaper Het Niuewsblad, the defender has made it clear he wasn’t insisting on leaving Tottenham during the summer transfer window: “It was no disappointment to me that I did not make a transfer. I didn’t necessarily want to leave.”

Getting back in the Spurs team is described as a personal “victory” by the defender.
