Ajax director of football Marc Overmars is a ‘great candidate’ for Newcastle United’s new owners, according to De Telegraaf.

Earlier this month, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund completed their purchase of the Tyneside club. Their rebuild started by letting Steve Bruce step down from his position as the club’s manager on Wednesday.

The PIF plan to invest big in the market and to do that, they are looking for a sporting director with an impressive track record.

Overmars fits the bill, for guiding the Dutch club to multiple titles since taking over the job in 2012. His overall gross wage at Ajax is €696,000 and Newcastle are ready to offer a ‘million-dollar salary’ to join them.

Although the ex-Arsenal man has a contract with the Amsterdam club until 2024, the report explains he ‘can leave anytime’ by serving three months’ notice.

De Telegraaf suggest the ‘time is right’ for the Ajax director to take the next step in his career. Overmars had earlier stressed he will not move abroad until his children were at high school. This ‘obstacle has gone’.

Despite the Dutchman now being ‘sought after’ by Newcastle, the newspaper states it is still ‘unknwon’ whether Overmars is open to this change. He didn’t wish to respond to the news that the Magpies have identified him as a candidate for the sporting director job.
