Timo Werner to Liverpool has long felt like something which is pushed more from the RB Leipzig striker’s camp and the German media than from anyone connected to the Reds.
For over a year, Bild and SportBild have been reporting how well Werner could fit in at Anfield and how working under Jurgen Klopp would be ideal for him. There’s been talk of the player flirting with Liverpool, and yet there doesn’t appear to be anything serious going the other way.
An article from Bild on Sunday evening, which is also in the Monday newspaper, is a good example of that.
The headline reads: ‘New Liverpool plan with Werner?’
Much of the small article is taken up by Bild explaining RB Leipzig are dropping out of the title race, partly due to small goal drought from their main striker. He’s only scored once in his past seven Bundesliga matches, with Leipzig only winning two of them.
Werner is quoted as telling Sky Germany: “I think I already have the potential and the opportunities to play in a large team, but if suddenly this word ‘must’ is added, the pressure is even greater.”
This seems to have given Bild an idea.
They state he wouldn’t be given time at Liverpool to find his feet, so therefore it’s ‘conceivable’ Liverpool sign Werner and then ‘park’ him at his current club for a season, similar to what happened with Naby Keita.
Bild’s claims, which appear more based on their own brainwave than any information, will likely be twisted to suggest they mean more than they do.
