Everton’s win against Southampton at the weekend has given the club and fans a little bit of hope following their very poor start in the Premier League.
Toffees midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson spoke to the Iceland media on Tuesday, and talked about how crucial it was to get three points in this game and hopefully start a new positive period.
“It was very important to continue with this game. It was strong to score against Tottenham, followed by three points. There are tough games ahead of us, we have Norwich at home and then four very tough games are coming,” Sigurdsson told Fotbolti.
Just like he said, Everton have a pretty tough sequence ahead. After the game against the Canaries, the Toffees play Leicester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United. That’s why Sigurdsson claims they must have ‘faith’ in their team once they’re back from the international break.
“You always have faith in it, but you don’t know what happens. It’s time for us to get started.”
Asked about the clubs who started the season badly, he mentioned two who have been below expectations, and added Everton to them.
“You can name a team like United and Tottenham, and ourselves. There are only three points up to fifth place, which is really amazing considering how things have been with us. The league is such that if you achieve three results in a row you will jump up four or five places. There’s a lot of games ahead and it’s fun when there’s plenty of games.”
Sigurdsson also spoke about Liverpool, and pointed out Everton’s local rivals had a good head-start on Manchester City last season, yet still failed to win the title.
