Renewing his contract with Newcastle United back in 2016, Ayoze Perez is technically tied to the Magpies until 2021.

That means, on paper, the St James’ Park faithful should be getting two more years of the Spanish forward, although he appears to have other plans.

Speaking to El Chiringuito in Spain, Pérez was asked a number of questions in a rather casual interview, ranging from whether Eden Hazard would be a good signing for Real Madrid to his future at Newcastle.

On the latter, he said: “I believe in cycles. There comes a moment where you consider things, there comes a time for a change and after five years, that time has probably come. To return to your country in a big team to enjoy the First Division would be something good for my career.”

Signed from CD Tenerife back in 2014 for just £1.8m, there is no doubt that Newcastle will make a considerable profit on the now 25-year-old, who has been an instrumental part of Rafa Benitez’s plans this season, scoring seven goals and providing four assists in 34 games.

Since joining the Magpies, the forward has played 188 times in all competitions, scored 42 goals and assisted his teammates 17 times.

As for his next destination, he appears to have made the league he wishes to play in rather clear.
