In their Monday edition, L’Equipe named their World XI of 2020. They pick such a team every year, and it’s something they take pretty seriously, going through all the options for each position in the week prior.
This year, Bayern Munich lead the way with four players in the selection. Liverpool come next with three, although one of those, Thiago Alcantara, spent the first half of last season with the German champions.
Thiago moved to Anfield in the summer window, and has only managed 151 minutes of football this season for Liverpool, being absent first due to a Covid-19 positive test and then due to a knee injury.
The other two Liverpool players in the selection are Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Jurgen Klopp’s front three of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Firmino miss out on a place.
Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne is the only other Premier League player to be picked in the eleven, with the rest made up of Manuel Neuer, Alphonso Davies, Sergio Ramos, Joshua Kimmich, Neymar, Cristiano Ronaldo and Robert Lewandowski.
L’Equipe reporters vote for the selection.
