Meunier: Big Man United fan, hints at future PL move
Lambasted for a long time by a large chunk of the Manchester United fanbase for his performances at right-back, Antonio Valencia has, under José Mourinho, convincingly turned things around for himself at Old Trafford.
Now seen as one of the best in his position in the league, the Ecuador international earned himself a contract extension after being voted United’s Player of the Month by fans.
Keeping him at the club until at least June 2018, the new deal is also a sign that Mourinho probably isn’t looking for a right-back as things stand, putting Thomas Meunier’s career dreams on hold for a little while longer.
The Paris Saint-Germain right-back, signed in the summer from Club Brugge for just over £5m, has given an interview to DH in Belgium ahead of his game against Barcelona on Tuesday evening, explaining his ambitions for the future.
He said: “I’ve always said that one day, I would like to play in the Premier League. I’m very happy in Paris and if I finish my career there, it won’t be a disappointment, far from it. But, if one day, I had to leave Paris, why not?
“On the other side of the Channel, there are the stadiums, the fans, and I’ve never hidden that I’m a big fan of Manchester United, which remains, in my eyes, the real reference in the world of football.”
And when DH hinted the Premier League side could be in the market for a right-back as they don’t have a ‘great’ one in their team, Meunier was quick to put them straight.
He said: “Ah, but you forgot about Antonio Valencia. He’s quite the player. Plus, I’m pretty sure he’s just extended his contract by a year.”
While there might not be a Manchester United transfer in the summer for the Belgian right-back, the 25-year-old still has plenty of time to make his dream come true.
Meunier has made 23 appearances in all competitions for Paris Saint-Germain this season, scoring two goals and assisting teammates four times.
