Birmingham City midfielder Willum Þór Willumsson has told the Icelandic media that’s he’s very happy to have signed for the Championship side.
Willumsson signed for the Blues this summer from Go Ahead Eagles for an undisclosed transfer fee.
Speaking to Fotbolti ahead of Iceland’s Nations League clash with Montenegro tomorrow night, the 25-year-old was asked about his transfer to Birmingham City.
Despite swapping the Eredivisie for the English third tier, Willumsson is still happy with the transfer because he’s bought into the Birmingham City project.
“People from the outside might look at me going from the Dutch first division to the third league and think it’s a bit strange – which I completely understand – but Birmingham is not a club that has to be in League One. This is a giant club that has new owners, and has bought a lot of players this summer, and even though it’s League One, it’s all tough games very nice step for me and I’m very satisfied,” said the Iceland international.
Asked about his future plans with Birmingham City, the midfielder said the aim is for the club to achieve promotion to the Premier League and that he hopes he can play his role making this happening.
“The ambition is to go up this year and they are talking about the English Premier League in the next few years. There are big goals, and it is fun to be a part of this project. Hopefully I’ll help them go as far as possible,” said Willumsson.
Since arriving in July, Willumsson has already made five appearances for Birmingham City this season, scoring one goal in the league.
He’s contracted to the club until June 2028.
