Carles Gil on Sunday enjoyed a distinct up in his up and down season with Deportivo La Coruna. The Aston Villa loanee started the match against Barcelona, due to fears with the fitness of others, and he didn’t let himself down.
Deportivo got themselves a crucial 2-1 victory and the unexpected three points has seen them pull clear of the relegation zone. Remaining in La Liga would be crucial to Depor making Gil’s move from Aston Villa permanent.
Spanish newspaper Marca gave Gil two stars out of three and say he attacked when he could and created a nuisance for Barcelona’s Sergio Busquets. Gil gets praise from several Spanish newspapers on Monday, and whilst the Aston Villa outcast wasn’t one of the very best performers, he did well enough to get credit.
Coming off just after an hour, Gil wasn’t on the pitch when Depor got their crucial winner.
Good, if not spectacular, performances like this one against Barcelona, will help cement a reputation for Gil, and therefore make it easier when the time comes for Aston Villa to sell him.
An Aston Villa return is still possible, but Gil’s future looks liker to be in Spain than with Steve Bruce at Villa Park.
