In the winter transfer window, the Italian press was confident about Napoli’s interest in Tottenham’s Timo Werner.

There was a suggestion that the Italian side made contact for the German and wanted to understand the forward’s situation after losing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to Paris Saint-Germain.

SportBILD have reported today that negotiations about a Tottenham exit were ‘well advanced’ during January and Napoli were actually quite keen on signing the 29-year-old.

The transfer didn’t go through because of a thigh injury that Werner had picked up in January. On top of that, a departure from Tottenham would have only happened if his next club had paid all of his wages.

Napoli weren’t the only sides interested, as some Bundesliga clubs also came forward for the ex-Chelsea man.

Despite a disappointing spell at the London giants, there is still interest in Werner and the report believes that New York Red Bulls could emerge as an option for him in the summer.

So far this season, the versatile forward has made 27 appearances in all competitions, scoring once and assisting three times.
