Marco Asensio chose not to be included in Spain’s U21 squad for the European championships this summer, a competition the country won.
He’s received some criticism in Spain, but the Real Madrid player was determined to be fresh and ready to impress for his club in the coming season. Those plans have been torn to shreds after he picked up an injury in a friendly against Arsenal.
Marca report initial medical examinations show he’s torn his cruciate ligament in the left knee, which will see him out for most of the season.
After the match, Unai Emery suggested it could also be bad news for Arsenal, given the club are trying to complete the signing of Dani Ceballos. This has led to much worry among the more nervous elements of Arsenal’s fanbase.
But what are they saying in Spain, is there reason to worry?
AS have an article suggesting it could be an issue, although that seems largely motivated by Emery’s comments.
Marca have an article going over, in some detail, how Asensio’s injury will impact Madrid’s summer business, and Ceballos doesn’t even get a mention.
The players it could impact are Isco, Brahim Dias, Vinicius, James Rodriguez, Kubo, Rodrygo… and even Gareth Bale.
Ceballos isn’t as attacking as Asensio and doesn’t play as wide, Marca clearly don’t think his future will be impacted by this injury.
Calma, as a certain former Real Madrid star used to say.
