Aston Villa’s Robin Olsen could be set for a return to his homeland, although there is plenty to be done on that front before it happens.
Fotboll Skanalen cover comments from Sweden international Emil Forsberg today about his friend and a potential move back to Sweden.
34-year-old Olsen is currently in the final year of his deal at Aston Villa after joining them in a €3.5m deal from AS Roma in July 2022.
It’s the latest stage in a varied career to date that saw him start in Sweden with Malmo before heading to Denmark with FC Copenhagen, then Italy with Roma as well as loan spells at Everton and Sheffield United in England before his move to Aston Villa.
He’s not featured for Unai Emery’s side this season and has only made 17 appearances for them since joining in 2022.
A return to Sweden at the end of his contract next summer ha been mooted, with many players the world over electing to go back to their homeland when their careers come to an end.
Forsberg has hinted this is on the cards for Olsen but insists there is plenty left to be done before it can happen.
“It’s hard. I miss his Scanian. We’ve stuck together all these years and it’s strange to be here without him. But it is what it is, and I hope he is back next time,” he said.
“We’ll see what happens there… We’ll see, I can’t say much. We’ll see. There is a lot to be done, I think. But it will be what is best for Robin, no matter what.”
