Aitor Elizegi is still settling into being Athletic Club Bilbao’s new president, a hugely important role given the Basque side’s recent struggles and proud outlook.

He’s already been talking about transfers, and it’s no surprise that Fernando Llorente has come into the picture.

Llorente left Bilbao on a free transfer which took him to Juventus. It was a very bad ending, with the striker somewhat ostracised by leaving his club in such a way.

Under the old president, the Tottenham player holding his hand out for a reunion hadn’t been openly welcomed, and the change makes a move more possible.

Asked about Llorente, Elizegi made it clear that the player’s open desire for a return is a step in the right direction, but much depends on Spurs. AS quote him as saying: “That’s where it starts. I don’t know if Tottenham negotiates.”

Unless the Basque club are willing to part with a good transfer fee, potentially €10m or more, then it’s doubtful Tottenham would grant a January exit.

Spurs would need to bring a replacement in, even if just to help with squad cover.

A free transfer in the summer could be likelier.
