At Manchester United for four years between 1997 and 2001, Teddy Sheringham enjoyed his fair share of success at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson.

While he won three Premier Leagues with the Red Devils, as well as an FA Cup, few goals in his career will have been as important as the one in the 1999 Champions League final against Bayern Munich.

Not only that, but he also picked up the assist for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s winner a couple of minutes later to cap perhaps one of the more memorable substitute appearances of all time after coming on in the 67th minute to replace Jesper Blomqvist.

Sheringham remains in the hearts of many Manchester United fans for his impact during his time there, and still holds a certain affinity for both the Red Devils and Tottenham.

Currently in Mauritius for the golf Celebrity Series Grand Final, the former striker was interviewed by L’Express, a local newspaper, where he was asked about the current managerial situation at Old Trafford.

Labelling Ralf Rangnick’s time in charge as ‘correct’, he pointed out the club are still far from the top three, even if it isn’t the German’s fault directly.

As to who could replace him, Sheringham was asked if he saw Erik ten Hag as the ideal candidate to take over.

He replied: “Perhaps, I don’t know him enough to say yes or no. For me, Mauricio Pochettino would be a good choice for Manchester United. I think he plays the game that United wants to play. He dictates the game to the opponent, he doesn’t sit and wait. That’s what Manchester United fans grew up with, you know, that’s how a 78-year-old man called Fergie played in his time.”
