On Thursday, Manchester United confirmed the appointment of Ajax boss Erik ten Hag as their new manager from next season.

The Red Devils will have to hand the Dutchman the right tools so that he can help the club return to fighting for silverware.

It has been widely reported in the UK that one of the areas that Manchester United are looking to strengthen is their heart of the back four.

According to Italian journalist Rudy Galetti, the 52-year-old’s first signing as the manager of the Premier League will ‘most likely be a centre-back’.

He made these claims on Twitter and Galetti further went on to explain that Manchester United currently have ‘two hot names’ for the same position.

Those are Villarreal star Pau Torres and Ajax defender Jurrien Timber.

Ten Hag is well aware of the 20-year-old’s qualities as he is currently managing Timber at the Eredivisie side.

The English club looked at Torres before they signed Raphaël Varane from Real Madrid last summer, and it appears the Yellow Submarine’s centre-back is now back again on Manchester United’s agenda.

This is also being reported by Cadena SER, who state the Red Devils are battling their local rivals, Manchester City, for the Spaniard.

In fact, it’s made clear that any attempt to get him would need to see either club bid more than €60m, with his release clause currently set at €70m.
