Late on Wednesday, Spanish journalist Gerard Romero reported it is ‘probable’ a deal to take Frenkie de Jong to Manchester United could be sealed in the coming weeks.
On May 12th, Sport reported the Red Devils are ‘convinced’ the Barcelona player can lead Erik ten Hag’s project at Old Trafford.
It was also stated Manchester United have initiated contact to negotiate for the 25-year-old’s transfer.
Mundo Deportivo explains the Netherlands international is ‘tempted by Manchester United’.
Ten Hag knows the midfielder firsthand, having coached him at Ajax. It’s said the 52-year-old’s ‘desire’ is to have the player again at his disposal, this time at Old Trafford.
However, Ten Hag’s ‘desire collides with the will’ of De Jong as he wants to be part of a project that provides Champions League football.
Manchester United will not feature in Europe’s elite club competition next season and there is ‘no guarantee’ they can return to the Champions League during the 2023/24 season.
That, however, isn’t the case with Barca, and he wants to continue at the club.
Mundo state De Jong wants to succeed at the Camp Nou and ‘would only change his mind if he was pushed out’.
As it stands, Xavi Hernández’s side have not made any movement to push the player out of Barcelona.
With Ten Hag keen to have De Jong at Manchester United, it needs to be seen whether Barca will encourage the player to make a move away from the Camp Nou.
