Now that the season is finished, and that Bafétimbi Gomis scored his 20th league goal for Marseille at the weekend against Bastia, negotiations between the Ligue 1 club and Swansea are likely to take place.
Whether or not they will come to a happy conclusion for all involved remains to be seen, but considering how important the French forward has been this season, talks are bound to happen.
According to RTL in France, Swansea are expecting around €4m for the 31-year-old, who has one year left on his contract in Wales.
While there is little to criticise about Gomis’ season, a skepticism remains regarding Marseille’s desire to keep the forward, mostly because of his age and his wage.
The player has repeated more than once he would be happy to remain in the south of France beyond this season, yet that doesn’t rest on him.
One thing is certain, though, and that is that he doesn’t want to be a rotation player next year. He wants to start.
Once again making this clear in an interview with RTL on Sunday, Gomis also said he would be returning to Wales soon.
He said: “I’m going to take a bit of holiday and return there at the beginning of next season. Whether that is to then come back to Marseille or go somewhere else, there’s three parties that need to agree on something.
“There’s everything to be happy here (in Marseille). Without holding back, I managed to do what I came here for. I am not, and never will be a backup striker.”
The player, relayed by Le10 Sport, also explained he hadn’t spoken to Swansea, Bob Bradley or Paul Clement all season long, but that he would let them know of his intentions soon.
Our bet is that they don’t involve him spending longer than necessary at the Liberty Stadium, especially with past reports of interest from the Middle-East in his services.
