Having chosen not to make Steven Fletcher’s loan permanent and selling Michy Batshuayi to Chelsea for a reported £33m, Marseille desperately need a striker.
Even with the money from the Belgian’s sale, the Ligue 1 club cannot afford to spend big on any player this season, such is the dire state of their finances, and a loan is far more likely.
The main target, it seems, happens to be a striker with plenty of Ligue 1 experience, and that man is Bafétimbi Gomis.
The 30-year-old, who enjoyed spells with Saint-Etienne, Troyes and Lyon, is apparently looking for a return to his home country, and Marseille are keen to add him to their squad.
Mercato365 in France report Swansea and Marseille are currently in talks over a free year-long loan for Gomis, with the Welsh club to pay 70% of the striker’s wages for the duration of the deal.
The striker has scored 102 goals in 309 Ligue 1 games throughout his career, a ratio that dropped considerably when he moved to England in 2014 (13 goals in 64 appearances).
