Nico Gaitan is still an Atletico Madrid player, despite the club being keen to sell during the January transfer window, and despite a string of interest from clubs as far apart as Boca Juniors and Zenit.

In their Saturday edition Marca go over the situation, and what actually happened, and there’s interest for Swansea City, Watford, and Southampton.

According to the Spanish newspaper, Monterrey, Boca Juniors and Swansea City all made offers for Gaitan, only to see Atletico reject them, feeling they could hold out for a better deal.

There was also widespread interest, with Inter Milan, Benfica, Sporting, Watford, Southampton and ‘other English clubs’ named as those who had registered their interest but weren’t quite keen enough to forward an offer for the Argentine.

Atletico can still sell or loan Gaitan to a club whose transfer window remains open, and that gives a chance for Zenit. Marca say the Russian side have offered a €2 loan deal which would see Gaitan move for the remainder of the season, but Atletico knocked that back too.

Now Gaitan has to wait and see what else comes in, or wait until the summer when clubs like Swansea, Watford and Southampton could return.
