The Daily Mirror reported at the weekend that Zinedine Zidane has been telling friends he expects a call from Manchester United if the Jose Mourinho reign descends to the level the club decide a replacement is needed.
The English newspaper don’t only claim they’re aware of what Zidane tells his friends, but also aware of what the former Real Madrid manager would expect at Old Trafford.
The Mirror say they know that Zidane has been compiling a target, and know who is on that list, stating: ‘Players on Zidane’s list include Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos, Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcantara, James Rodriguez – currently on loan at Bayern from Real Madrid – and Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani.’
Because much of the European media are currently low on big transfer claims, this one has been grasped at, but is still raising eyebrows.
Whilst not outright saying it’s a load of nonsense, Mundo Deportivo believe it’s ‘striking’ to see the name of James Rodriguez. That’s because the Colombian didn’t exactly see eye to eye with Zidane on football, that being behind his move to Bayern Munich.
And whilst James is technically on loan, Bayern have a buying option of around €40m, which they’re going to use unless anything dramatic like a serious injury happens.
Mundo carry another snippet, which holds more water, Zidane telling the Spanish media he expects to return to a job soon-ish: “Surely, before long, I will return to train because it’s what I like doing.”
