Eric Dier’s start at Bayern Munich since arriving from Tottenham last month has been surprising, with the player quickly proving a worthwhile signing.
That’s according to supervisory board member at Bayern Munich Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who has admitted he has been surprised by what he’s seen so far.
Dier joined Bayern Munich from Tottenham in an initial loan deal midway through January, with the two sides negotiating a deal that will see Spurs paid down the line once Dier has achieved certain objectives.
He arrived at the German club as very much a back up option, with Thomas Tuchel having sought out a player who can play in defence and defensive midfield.
Getting him out of Tottenham was not a difficult task given he had barely featured under Ange Postecoglou this season and was out of contract in the summer, meaning all parties were open to the deal.
That, though, meant he had to take time to get back up to speed and Rummenigge has been surprised by how quickly that has happened for the 30-year-old.
“Eric Dier surprised me a little, to be honest,” he said in an interview with Allgemeine Zeitung.
“He hasn’t had much match practice at Tottenham this season, but he’s performed well in all the games he’s played for us so far and is an absolute alternative in defence.
“He’s physically powerful, strong with his head, tactically clever and has a great passing game going forward. And the fact that he’s a good mate of Harry Kane doesn’t hurt either.”
