Besiktas winger Kerim Frei is set to stay at Kara Kartal according to AkşamSpor and AmkSpor. The 22-year old’s impressive performance against Darıca Gençlerbirliği in the Turkish Cup this week has convinced manager Senol Gunes he deserves a final chance to save his Besiktas career.
Signing for Besiktas when he was 19 years old the player has been linked with a move to Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion after his struggles at Kara Kartal. Kerim has always been encouraged by Gunes to play the team game and keep it simple, but this hasn’t always been the case.
However, Kerim’s performance in the cup has convinced Gunes that he’ll have a part to play in the second half of the season, especially with Besiktas being very short of wingers.
As we’ve covered Sunderland manager David Moyes and West Brom’s Tony Pulis are keen on 22-year old, and Besiktas were prepared to sell or loan him out, but now the situation has changed.
Kerim’s career has been on the decline since signing for Besiktas, but a deal could have been good business for both Sunderland and West Brom given his potential.
Besiktas’ board member Erdal Torunogulları also spoke to Ajansspor today and asked about Kerim. He said: ”Kerim is a good guy. He’s wanted by some clubs of course but he’ll stay with us. We’ve signed because we believed his talents will help us.”
A former Grasshoper youth player Kerim has played 109 games for Besiktas, scoring 9 goals. Kerim also had spells at Fulham and Cardiff.
