Turkey’s Fanatic this week claimed Jeremain Lens sent a quite forthright message to Sunderland regarding his transfer future.
The Turkish media often paraphrase footballers involved in transfers, then presenting their words as pretty much fact.
Lens is said to have sent the following message to Sunderland: ‘I opened a new page in Fenerbahce. I am very happy here. My decision is definite, I will continue my career in Fenerbahce. Do not accept the offer of another club without me being aware. I expect understanding from you in this regard.’
These claims seem to be very much for a Turkish audience, after Besiktas were linked to the player. It just doesn’t sound believable that Lens would put himself in such a position after angering David Moyes with comments earlier in the season.
Furthermore, it’s simply not the right time. There are serious doubts over Dick Advocaat remaining with Fenerbahce beyond the end of this season. It was reported in the Netherlands this week that Advocaat is set to leave, and that would put question marks over Lens’ future.
Lens is currently taking time off from Fenerbahce to attend his father’s funeral, so sending Sunderland demanding messages is likely to be the last thing on his mind.
