Sunderland are ‘in the running’ for Lyon striker Georges Mikautadze, but he is only a Plan B for them at this moment in time.

That’s according to Foot Mercato, who report that Mikautadze has a growing list of suitors thanks to Lyon’s provisional relegation to Ligue 2.

The French giants are facing the prospect of being a second division club after the DNCG refused to turn their back on the threat to relegate them amid financial problems for John Textor’s club.

The matter is set to be definitively dealt with on July 10th and that means they are stuck when it comes to the transfer window until that point.

That’s not stopping it moving around the club, though, and Mikautadze is highly valued across Europe. Eintracht Frankfurt are considering him as a replacement for Hugi Ekitike should he leave.

And then there is Sunderland, who are also in the running at this moment in time. They’ve been focused on the French market already this summer as they strengthen their squad for their return to the Premier League.

Their interest has already been reported, and they remain on the case, although according to FM’s information Mikautadze is only a Plan B for now. Their priority is Matthis Albine and a €20m offer has been submitted to Nantes for him.

If that doesn’t work out, Mikautadze is the alternative option, but it all depends what happens to Lyon on July 10th.
