Eduardo Salvio’s move from Portugal to England always seemed a bit pushed, since the rumours never made much sense.
In an interview in Argentina, the player admitted his desire to play in the Premier League, and since then, the Portuguese papers started claiming that the UK would be his destination for next season.
These rumours started even before they found out which club Salvio would sign for, and Benfica were reportedly asking €25m for the player.
Then Sunderland magically showed up wanting to pay the exact €25m for the 26-year-old. We always thought this interest was a bit strange, but let’s pretend it actually happened.
Now A Bola are summing up Benfica’s profit for this summer, as the club could end up making more than €100m.
Salvio is included in that list, but they don’t say he’s worth €25m. They claim that Benfica could be making more than €30m by selling him.
Sunderland aren’t mentioned this time, but they were the only club linked to the winger in the past week.
Salvio isn’t a bad player, but certainly isn’t worth all that money either. With 13 goals and 11 assists last season, he’s leaving the club due to the competition in his position.
Transfermarkt, for example, says his price has been dropping. According to the website, Salvio was worth €22m last summer, but they currently value him at €15m. Will Benfica get the double of that? We doubt it.
There should also be a concern over the player’s work permit, since he doesn’t have an EU passport and isn’t regularly called up for the Argentine national team.
