Flamengo have already confirmed their desire to sign Arsenal’s Jorginho at the end of this season.
The Brazil-born Italy international’s contract expires in June and he travelled with his family to Rio de Janeiro during the last international break.
Globo Esporte state the Arsenal player’s trip helped the move progress and they provide the latest on Flamengo’s ongoing pursuit.
There was a new meeting between the Brazilian club and Jorginho’s representatives on Sunday and the distance between the parties was reduced.
Both parties gave in a little and ‘came close to an agreement’ on the figures, the main obstacle so far.
Flamengo sporting director José Boto will take the figures to the club president for approval. A new meeting is scheduled later this week to finalise the details of the agreement.
In the event of an agreement between Flamengo and Jorginho, he will then negotiate with Arsenal to secure an early release. This is done so that he can be in Flamengo’s squad for Club World Cup that’ll start on June 14th.
The player will have to give up bonuses at Arsenal, which the South American club would compensate.
Last month, Jorginho’s agent João Santos stated he will hold talks with the Gunners and interested clubs after April 15th.
Globo now state his camp are prioritising Flamengo but don’t rule out other options. The Middle Eastern market could heat up in the coming weeks, and therefore, the Brazilian club want to seal this operation as quickly as possible.
Journalist Gabriel Reis took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to state that Jorginho doesn’t have to sign a pre-contract with Flamengo.
Reis claims the idea is for the midfielder to terminate his contract with Arsenal after the end of this season in May. He will then sign with the Brazilian club before the Club World Cup.
