Former Netherlands international René van der Gijp is of the belief Antony has jeopardised any chance of moving to a big club like Liverpool or Manchester City in the summer, after his celebration against Feyenoord.

The winger has been one of the standout performances for Ajax this season, managing 12 goals and 10 assists from 33 matches. His last goal was at the Johan Cruyff Arena, to help Erik ten Hag’s side seal a comeback against Feyenoord.

The Amsterdam club came from behind twice before the Brazilian’s 87th minute goal made sure Ajax sealed three points.

Antony celebrated by removing his shirt and standing on top of the advertising board. He was booked by the referee and minutes later, he picked up another yellow, resulting in his sending off in stoppage time.

Van der Gijp questions what sort of an impression Antony would have left, if scouts from the likes of Liverpool and other clubs were in attendance to watch him.

“Suppose we are in the stands together as a scout for Manchester City or Liverpool… And we are looking at Antony, what do you think we would say when we come back on Monday?” Van der Gijp told Vandaag Inside, related by Soccernews.nl.

“We will not take that. You don’t see a Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sané or Mohamed Salah doing this? Then you can say: he is young, but it can also get crazier.”

Another ex-Netherlands international, Wim Kieft, has echoed Van der Gijp’s comments.

“He is not that young anymore, because he has been doing this for two years. Such a boy cannot be calmed by a coach, in the end,” Kieft said,

“Ten Hag will of course never say that Antony behaves like an idiot, but he thinks so. In general, this behaviour is addressed in the locker room, then someone says: hey, what are you doing?”

There’s no mention whether Liverpool or City have any interest to sign Antony in the next window.

Even if there was an interest, the Reds surely wouldn’t be put off by the South American’s behaviour, considering Salah did a similar celebration after scoring a late goal in his side’s 2-0 win over Manchester United at Anfield in January 2020.
