Liverpool are ‘looking into’ a potential move for director of football Max Eberl following his departure from RB Leipzig.
That’s according to BILD, who say Liverpool could provide competition to Bayern Munich for the director of football’s signature.
Eberl left Leipzig at the end of September after the German club accused him of a lack of commitment amid continued links to Bayern Munich.
He’s reportedly been on agenda at the German champions for months as they continue to restructure behind the scenes.
Eberl is believed to have been toying with the idea of a switch to Munich for some time, having never publically denied it either. He was expected to end up there eventually, with his path clear following the departure from Leipzig.
However, according to BILD, Liverpool are also ‘looking into’ a potential move and providing ‘suddenly fierce competition’ for his signature.
They currently have Jorg Schmadtke in the role, but his contract only runs until the end of the year, and it remains to be seen if he stays beyond that point. If he doesn’t, Eberl could be his replacement.
There has already been contact between him and Liverpool, with Eberl holding a conversation with Liverpool chief Billy Hogan on the sidelines of the clash with Rangers in the Champions League last season. That is referred to as a ‘non-binding conversation’.
Interestingly Eberl has the same agent as Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, Marc Kosicke, and is currently in Boston with the German national team. Boston is of course the home of Liverpool owners the Fenway Sports Group.
The links are there, then, and it seems the idea is one being considered, albeit only if Schmadtke doesn’t extend his stay at Anfield.
