After a few months of smiles and happiness after leaving Tottenham in the summer, it seems things have taken a turn for Giovanni Lo Celso at Real Betis.

That’s at least according to ABC Sevilla, who cover the midfielder today and how he is currently ‘lacking competitive character’.

The newspaper explains that Betis boss Manuel Pellegrini is currently struggling to find the best fit for his team and, crucially, how to get his best players all on the pitch.

The arrival of Antony from Manchester United has thrown something of a spanner in the works and finding a way to get Isco, Lo Celso and the Brazilian into a team that functions is proving to be tricky.

That’s led to an uncomfortable situation with Lo Celso, who had been shining since arriving from Tottenham in the summer.

He took advantage of the fact Isco was not fully fit and yet to return at that time and showed ‘tremendous quality’ and leadership in the team, becoming their top goal scorer in the process. That’s a record he still holds but his early success has ‘went down the drain’.

His last goal was on December 15th and the former Tottenham man is no longer flying. In fact, he is struggling to make any sort of impact in a new role out on the wing.

He’s very much lost his shine and the formula picked by Pellegrini to get him, Antony and Isco all into the same team is not working. Lo Celso is not completely blameless, though, as he’s been accused of having a ‘negative attitude’ and ‘lacking competitive character’ to boot.

His early success after arriving from Tottenham is quickly fading away and now questions are being asked, particularly as new signing Antony steals the limelight for himself.
