Pat Nevin has spoken to the Danish media about Kasper Schmeichel arriving at Celtic in the summer and has labelled the signing as a stoke of genius.
Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers brought in the Denmark international after Joe Hart announced his retirement at the back end of last season.
Speaking to Tipsbladet, Nevin was asked about Schmeichel joining the Scottish Premiership champions and the impact he will have. The 61-year-old thinks the Dane is an ideal replacement for Hart and he believes both keepers can be considered world class.
Nevin went on to say that his performances will be noted more in Europe rather than domestically.
“I have to say that it was a stroke of genius by Celtic to bring in Kasper Schmeichel. They had just lost an excellent goalkeeper. Joe Hart was a world-class goalkeeper, but now they have brought in another one.
“Kasper Schmeichel is also nearing the end of his career, but he is still a world-class goalkeeper. He will not have to work particularly hard in the league, but he will of course have more to do in the Champions League,” said the former Chelsea and Everton winger.
Schmeichel joined Celtic in July after leaving Anderlecht at the end of the last campaign.
He spent a season with the Belgian club.
Signing initially for just a season the 37-year-old has yet to concede a goal in the league after five games. This week he made his Champions League debut for his new club in his side’s 5-1 victory over Slovan Bratislava.
