It’s been only a couple of weeks since we started covering claims from the Portuguese media about Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in Benfica striker Carlos Vinícius.
So we admit it was a bit surprising when local outlets started confirming the move last night, especially because this isn’t the kind of transfer the Eagles were expecting.
Newspaper Record brings a front page with the player on Thursday, saying the striker will be in London for his medicals with Spurs today.
It’s said Tottenham are signing Carlos Vinícius on a loan deal, for which they’ll pay a fee of €3m.
The agreement also includes a buying option for José Mourinho and co. to get him permanently at the end of the season for €40m.
Record claims that Benfica’s intention was to let the player go on a permanent move, but the numbers on the table were of about €30m, so president Luís Filipe Vieira chose to let the player prove himself in the Premier League.
The idea is that Vinícius succeeds just like Raúl Jiménez did at Wolverhampton Wanderers two years ago, and ends up moving permanently.
The Brazilian was protected by a release clause of €100m, but wasn’t in the plans of manager Jorge Jesus for the season.
