Mark Hughes’ wish to keep Marc Muniesa at Stoke City wasn’t received with much excitement in Spain.

The player was reportedly a target for Real Betis, but given the manager’s recent quotes in his press conference, the Spanish side should now be keeping an eye on other potential signings.

The biggest motivation for Betis to try and sign the player was that he wasn’t getting many minutes at the Potters, and even suggested he could temporarily leave to play more.

But after starting the last two Premier League games, against Watford and Burnley, the defender’s situation looks an awful lot better.

Speaking to the English media, Hughes said this weekend: “He is a guy that just gets on with his work but clearly he wants opportunities. He is a young man and wants to play football.

“We like to think we will be able to give him enough game time to allow him to be comfortable with his position here because we don’t want him to leave.”

That’s why Estadio Deportivo considers that the manager will not accept a move so soon. They say that Hughes’ statement made the transfer sound ‘almost impossible’ and Betis should now start looking for other targets for their defence.

Muniesa signed for Stoke from Barcelona in 2013, but has only made 60 appearances for the English side.
