In December Catalan newspaper Sport claimed Tottenham were one of a number of clubs interested in signing Marc Cucurella. The 18 year old is currently registered to Barcelona’s Juvenil A team but in the process of moving up to Barcelona’s B side, who play their football in the third tier of Spanish football.
The Catalan worry in December was that Cucurella, referred to as Cucu, has a contract expiring in June, which would make it easier for clubs like Tottenham to swoop for him, leaving Barcelona with few tools to keep him.
It’s now February, and there’s still no new contract for Cucurella, which would see English interest become more worrying. Sport again cover the player on Tuesday and interest from England, explaining that Cucu is one of the stars of Barcelona’s youth system right now, and will have earned his promotion to the B squad.
Still, with no renewal, it leaves Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham, and other interested clubs, with a clear road to signing the player.
Cucu’s current club are working on it, but the longer there’s no renewal, the more Barca will worry over the left back’s long term future.
